Our Story

Our Story

Hi, I’m Jeff McCombs and I’m the founder of Magical Nutrients.

In 2009, my wife, Ana Maria gave premature birth to our twins (Ana Sophia and Ethan Kai) at 25 weeks of age. The average pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks. They weighed 1 lb., 9 ounces, and 1 lb. 10 ounces at birth.  Because of their prematurity, we spent the first 133 days of their life with them in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. During that time, they were given horrible tasting vitamins that they would always throw up. One doctor who had tasted those vitamins, and thought that they tasted disgusting, said that if I created a line of children’s supplements, he would recommend them.

I left the hospital committed to find or create something better. When I went to health stores, I found that the kids supplements on the shelves had more sugar than the Halloween candy that was for sale at the same time. If a child took the recommended dosages on these vitamin bottles, the daily amount of sugar would equal 1-2 sugar cubes. This didn’t seem right to me.

With my children as motivation and a background in nutrition, I felt that I could create better supplements. When I asked people in the children’s vitamin industry why they put sugars in the supplements, they said that it’s the only way to get kids to take them. I knew there had to be a better way, as sugar can either block the absorption of nutrients in the vitamins, or the body in processing the sugar can use up many of those nutrients. In a multivitamin/mineral formula, sugar can impact practically all of the nutrients present. While this can benefit the companies that make these type of vitamins, the benefits to children can be greatly reduced.

The answer is Magical Nutrients. Magical Nutrients is a children’s line of Incredible tasting vitamins that are sugar-free, Non-GMO, allergen-free, and gluten-free. There are no capsules, preservatives, dispersants, flow agents, fillers, or other substances that children don’t need to consume. Magical Nutrients’ vitamins come in an easy to consume powder-filled stick pack. Simply mix in 6 ounces of water and enjoy!

Since children don’t relate to taking multivitamins, vitamin C and other nutrients, we gave each product an identity that children could relate to. Our first product is a multivitamin and mineral product called Magical Wizard’s Potion. Our next product is going to be an immune support formula called Magical Knight’s Defense, followed by our calcium-magnesium supplement, Magical Dragon’s Breathe, and our vitamin C supplement, Magical Child’s Elixir.

We needed child-friendly images to match our products and we were fortunate enough to to work with Fian Arroyo, an award-winning children’s illustrator who drew our Wizard and other characters. You can see Fian’s wonderful images to the right here. Each character has a background story behind them based on a mythology for all of the characters. Click on an image to find out more about each one.

Next, we needed a website. We turned to another award-winning team at Interfuel. Mel and the gang at Interfuel, who have worked on sites for Sesame Street, Mattel, Nickelodeon, and Hasbro, produced a beautiful site for us. We are very grateful for the opportunity to work with such talented artists.

One of our core beliefs is the power of teaching. Eventually the site will have animation to allow kids to interact with the characters and learn practical lessons that help them to navigate the world they live in. Our commitment to children doesn’t stop with our formulas.

With each product that is purchased, children will receive a “Magical Code” found on a card within each box. Using the code, children can go to the Redeem and Donate page of our site, enter the code, and tell us which of the four charities they want us to donate to. We want to help inspire kids to take care of themselves first, and then help take care of others.

It’s taken over 4 years to bring Magical Nutrients to market. Along the way, we’ve had to overcome the typical hurdles of birthing any company, and unexpectedly, the hurdles of an industry, which pushes cheap ingredients and sugars, over expensive, high-quality ingredients and sugar-free options. It hasn’t been easy, but it was definitely worth it.
